My sweet marvellous father has offered to buy myself & my children a new computer -(desktop) for xmas 'cos ours has got old & clunky. (just the tower 'cos keyboard & screen are OK). It won't be an all singing & dancing thing - fairly budget but possibly built to spec
Now it will need to be good for kids homework but.......hehehe I think I need to take advice on what the most important features would be for the vidding. My current one has 200GB memory but only a Celeron processor & it always claims to be out of virtual memory.
So any ideas of what minimum memory/processor/graphics card to go for. Also any advice on FLVs (I think they come as software but after all I will be needin' some software  )

Please don't go into too much detail 'cos I will have no idea what is being said (I am so dull at this stuff!!LOL) :?

Thankee

ooo that's awesome!! i will ask my father and get back to you tonight-ish lol. my dad likes to keep tabs on the best computers and he works on videos for a living so i'm sure he'll have some good input.

i will ask him when he gets back from work tonight and then i will reply again. :)

although if you're looking for a good video-making program that is relatively cheap, i'd look into pinnacle.

lovetv

hi cathy!

well i asked my dad and he says you don't have to worry about processors since most new computers are good enough for your specific needs. memory should be about 3-4G but he says that's pretty normal these days too. as for the graphics card, go for around 256meg (average) to 572meg (best).

virtual memory apparently is just that. virtual. doesn't exist. i'd explain more but i don't get it lol.

i don't use flvs (my vid program can't read them) so no clue about programs for those. i paid for magic dvd ripper to get episodes off my dvds in mpeg or avi form.

i'd also recommend an external harddrive if you're worried about memory. you could keep your vid stuff (like video files) on there and it would speed up your computer.

happy vidding! *hugs*

Thanks for the tip on the Magic dvd ripper. Am giving the free trial a go as I speak to see how I get on. <exciting!> but very very slow!
Just got to think of a worthy project. :?:

yeah it's a bit slow but it's relatively inexpensive and it works well with dvds. i usually just let my computer do ripping while i'm at school and not using it. takes about 2-3 hours for 1 episode of 40 min. length. worth it though. :)

can't wait for your next vid! :D don't keep me waiting too long hehehe... <happydance1>

:P So happy - I can see your vids here again. In the process of transferring all my files across to new machine & working out how everything new works so it may be some time before any vidding occurs but thanks for all the advice!

Hi, I know that I'm a little late here, but just thought that I would drop a few tips here.
I am a big fan of the freeware community & spending the least amount of money possible. For video editing (when I'm not using my Mac,) I use Wax, a freeware editor. While it has a slightly steeper learning curve than some other programs, it definitely makes up for it with cost. For ripping DVD's I use DVDDecrypter(dvddecrypter.org.uk), then I use a converter from Red Kawa to make it usable. I hope that this can save you some money.
